Chicago’s top cop Jody Weis is looking for a way to file murder charges in the death of officer Alan Haymaker, the Chicago Tribune reports.
Haymaker died Monday morning when his squad car skidded off Lake Shore Drive and hit a light pole and a tree. He was en route to a burglary call.
Weis said he will charge those burglars with murder if and when they’re caught.
"Under Illinois statutes it appears they could be charged with murder... that is something I think that we'll be looking at with the state's attorney's office," Weis told the Tribune. "But I think it's something that we certainly will consider."
The burglary was reported at 3167 N. Clark, at the Consolidated Communications building, but no one is in custody for the crime.
Haymaker crashed at 5:06 a.m.
Police said icy road conditions could have played a factor in the crash.
Haymaker was honored Tuesday morning with a bunting ceremony at 23 precinct, where he worked since December.
Weis, along with members of the 100 club, which supports families of cops killed in action, visited Haymaker’s Portage Park home and presented his family with a $15,000 check.
Funeral arrangements for Haymaker have been scheduled for later this week, the department said.
A wake will be held on Thursday at Bethel Community Church, at 7601 W. Foster, from 3 p.m. until 9 p.m. Haymaker's funeral will be held Friday at the church. A public viewing has been scheduled for 10 a.m. with a church service to follow at 11 a.m.
Chicago police will escort Haymaker's family to private interment after the funeral service.
