Metra Police officer Thomas Cook was killed for his gun, prosecutors alleged on Monday, two years after the 43-year-old father of two was shot in the head.

"On that night, he was sitting in his uniform, in a marked vehicle, and he was executed by two individuals," Metra Police Chief James Sanford said.

According to investigators, 20-year-old Jeremy Lloyd is one of those individuals.

Lloyd was refused bail Monday by a Cook County Judge. He remains in jail, chargd with murder and armed robbery.

"Lloyd is alleged to have planned and participated in the murder, serving as a look-out," Sanford said.

"The murder of a police officer, is an attack on the entire criminal justice system, and unnerving to the general public, when criminals target those who are sworn to serve and protect," South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force Chief Tim McCarthy said.

Cook was on the job when he was shot and killed September 27, 2006 near the Sibley Metra station in Harvey.

Investigators say Lloyd and another person were looking for a weapon and allegedly shot Cook to steal his gun.

"Lloyd and another individual were observed running from the scene of the murder," Sanford said.

He was later found with Cook's .357, police said.

Lloyd was already in custody on attempted murder charges in an unrelated case when the current charges were brought against him. Police won't say what led them to Lloyd.

Cook's family expressed gratitude for the police department's work, saying that the charges give them some piece of mine.

Investigators say they are still searching for the other shooter and are actively working the case.
