Police Stop Rape In Progress

Purse in stairwell tips off neighbors

A Chicago woman is physically OK, but in shock after a man entered her Lincoln Park apartment and tried to rape her.  Police said they caught the man in the act after receiving a call from a concerned neighbor.

Casey Meehan and his wife were leaving their apartment near DePaul University Thursday night when they noticed a purse and its contents strewn about the staircase in the back of the building.

"There was also a window open and some handprints on the windows," he said, adding that he also heard noises coming from the apartment.

Meehan ultimately called police, who responded and said they caught 19-year-old Darrell Moore, of the 8000 block of South St. Lawrence Avenue, raping the 28-year-old woman.

Moore was taken into custody. The woman was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where she was listed in good condition.

"I'm devastated for her," said a tearful Megan Kirkpatrick, a friend of the victim.  "It's really scary."

The South Side man faces up to 30 years in prison after being charged Friday with home invasion and aggravated criminal sexual assault.
