Police Officer, Homeowner Shot and Killed on South Side

A decorated Chicago police officer was shot and killed Friday afternoon in the South Chicago neighborhood along with another victim, who was a retired police officer.

Michael Flisk, 46, was shot in the head at 1:30 p.m on the 8100 block of South Manistee Avenue, police said. He was processing the scene of a burglary inside a garage, police said.

The 20-year-veteran of the force  was pronounced dead at 2:30 p.m at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He leaves behind a wife and four children.

Flisk joined the Chicago Police Department in January of 1991 and amassed 67 awards throughout his career. Three of his siblings are also members of the force.

"Officer Flisk was a dedicated law enforcement professional, and demonstrated a commitment to serving and protecting this city throughout his nearly 20 year career," the Chicago Police Department said in a statement.

Earlier Friday police superintendent Jody Weis pledged a thorough investigation into the officer's slaying.

"We will squeeze that neighborhood and we will find the people who did this," Weis said.

Dozens of police officers descended on the neighborhood armed with assault rifles and K9 units immediately after the shooting. They began combing alleys and knocking on doors.

"This guy is still loose," officers on the scene told neighbors while instructing them to stay indoors.  "This is for your safety."

The other victim may have owned the home where the tech was working, according to reports. He is reportedly a retired officer. He was taken Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition and later died.

Police on the scene were searching for the shooting suspect. They do not have a motive for the crime.

The Chicago Police Memorial Foundation is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction of Flisk's killer.  The Foundation can be reached at 888-976-7468. Chicago Police Area Two detectives, who are also seeking information in the case, can be reached at 312-747-8272.

Flisk's death marks the second officer to be shot in the head this week.

Earlier this week off-duty officer David Blake was found with bullet wounds to the head on the 2900 block of West Seipp Street.
