Persons of Interest in Vernon Hills Slaying “Endangered”

Mom says son "missing and endangered."

Two young adults considered "persons of interest" in the beating death of a Vernon Hills woman last week are both now considered "missing and endangered."

Diane Baker, of Deerfield,  told NBC Chicago she hasn't heard from 21-year-old son, Daniel, since he and his girlfriend Kristina Aksman disappeared after Aksman's mother, Marina, was found dead in her home last Thursday.

In a phone interview Baker, a Deerfield resident, said she filed a missing-person report for her son to police in that city Saturday night. She declined to answer other questions, referring all inquiries to her lawyer Ed Genson.

"I love him very much," Baker said, referring questions about the investigation to her attorney, Ed Genson. "I want him home safely."

Genson, a prominent Chicago attorney who has represented former Gov. Rod Blagojevich and singer R. Kelly, told the Chicago Tribune no one knows what Aksman and Baker have done.

"The fact is both kids are missing," Genson told the paper. "We're just waiting to see what pans out when the children are somehow caught or surrender."

Vernon Hills police found Marina Aksam dead in her home April 1 after responding to the home in the 1800 block of Olympic Drive to investigate a car that had crashed into the front porch.

“Police said Kristina Aksman may be at risk because she has physical and mental disabilities.

Police have received close to 100 leads.

"I think we're getting closer. We're hopeful we'll bring them in by the end of today," Zimmerman said.

Police say they do not know if Kristina Aksman has her medication to treat seizures and isn't fully capable of caring for herself.  A judge recently appointed her mother as her legal guardian and police said they aren't yet sure if she's a suspect in the crime or a victim herself.

Baker and Kristina Aksman, who have been dating about eight months, were last seen at about 11 p.m. Wednesday in Baker's Deerfield home. Police said they may be driving a 2009 Nissan Rogue with Illinois license plate 4219607.
