An Alzheimer's patient missing since Monday was found unharmed as he walked in unincorporated Nottingham Park Monday night, authorities said, but it wasn't until Wednesday that his family knew he was safe.

James Newbauer was found near 51st Street and Nottingham Avenue and was taken to MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn Monday night, Oak Lawn police Division Chief Mike Kaufmann said..

Newbauer "knew his first name, but didn't know anything else. He was unable to relate anything" useful to hospital staff, Kaufmann said late Wednesday. After seeing news reports about Newbauer's disappearance, hospital staff called Oak Lawn police to make the connection with their "James Doe."

Relatives had been frantic over their missing loved one.

Newbauer has left home several times recently and has been found walking down 95th Street and as far away as Hometown and the Chicago Ridge Mall.

This latest walk -- about nine miles from his Oak Lawn home -- was his longest so far.

"We usually find him within four or five hours," she said. "We had no luck this time."
