A marine from Northern Illinois was killed in Afghanistan during combat.
The Department of Defense reports Lance Cpl. Alec E. Catherwood, 19, of Byron Ill, died while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan.
He was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.
According to the Rockford Register Star, Catherwood was engaged and to be married next year.
