Last week, in the small town of Mattoon, about 180 miles south of Chicago, a few high school students started a friendly game of flag football in honor of homecoming week. But the game got a little rough and soon fists started flying.

The police were called to break it all up

"It was a flag football game that turned into tackle," said Deputy Police Chief Jeff Branson,

Oh ... girls will be girls.

That's right. Girls.

Every year during homecoming week, the females at Mattoon High School play a "powder puff" football game. The game, which is not sponsored by the school district, got rougher than was anticipated this year, and some of the players got overly physical.

Once the game was over, some of the competitors got into a confrontation.

A male spectator tried to break up two fighting girls, but then he was punched by another man, 36-year-old Jason Hudson, a relative of one of the players.

Tempers flared, and several people were prepared to continue the fight with Hudson. Fortunately, an officer got a handle on the situation.

"An off-duty officer and others kept that crowd off Hudson," Branson said. "Many people listened to them and dispersed. That is good how they showed restraint at that point."

With females this aggressive, we wonder if they'd be better off on the high school's official football team.

Matt Bartosik, a "between blogs" blogger, never walks away from a fight. He runs.
