Firefighters Put Out Extra-Alarm Meat-packing Plant Fire

A South Side meat-packing plant containing hazardous chemicals burned for approximately three hours on Christmas Day before more than 160 firefighters extinguished the blaze.
No injuries were reported Thursday.
Chicago Fire Department spokesman Jose Santiago says a hazardous materials team was called because authorities were worried about chemicals like ammonia and hydrogen in the building.
The Chicago Fire Department received a call before noon about the fire at the brick structure.
At least five fire trucks were at the plant and the building appeared to be badly damaged.
Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford says some of the walls collapsed.
Officials are investigating the cause of the fire.
