The number of homicides through June saw a decrease of almost 13 percent compared to the same time last year, with violent crimes also down more than 10 percent, according to statistics released Friday by Chicago police.

Crime overall dropped or was flat in 24 of the 25 Chicago police districts from January through June, with fewer incidents of violent and property index crimes -- which include burglary, theft and arson -- down in every category, according to a Chicago Police Department release.

The overall violent crime index was down 4.4 percent, with homicides down 12.7 percent, according to the release, which stated Chicago left the month of June with less than 200 homicides.

Aggravated assault was down 7.7 percent, aggravated battery was down 6 percent and criminal sexual assault was down 5.2 percent, the release said.

Despite the improvement, police noted several incidents in June where women were attacked late at night. Police are advising residents to be aware of their surroundings, especially late at night and are advising people to stay away from poorly lit areas. Residents should also travel with a friend or group of friends if possible and should carry a cell phone to report trouble immediately.
