Chicago's broadcast community is putting competion aside this week to raise money and help the victims of Haiti's massive earthquake.
The Chicago Helps Haiti relief drive will be held between 5 a.m. and 11 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 21. During those hours, volunteers from Hewitt Associates will staff a toll-free phone bank to take donations.
Nearly all of Chicago's television and radio stations will air the announcements. Money raised will go to the American Red Cross Haitian relief effort.
The American Red Cross and Chicago media last partnered with Hewitt in 2004 for a one-day telethon to aid victims of the Asian tsunami. That effort raised about $2 million locally.
Donations to the American Red Cross International Response Fund can be made anytime at ChicagoRedCross.com/haiti. Donations of $10 can also be made to the American Red Cross efforts by sending a text message to "90999" with the word "Haiti"
The Chicago Red Cross' Facebook (facebook.com/ChicagoRedCross) and Twitter (twitter.com/ChicagoRedCross) accounts will provide coverage of the telethon all day Thursday.
