A Chicago church held a public memorial for Michael Jackson Sunday with songs, prayers and a candlelight vigil.

Sweet Holy Spirit Church of Chicago hosted the event where the choir sang the late artist's hits. Bishop Larry Trotter discussed song lyrics in a talk he gave to the hundreds in attendance.

"It was always positive, it was always about people, it was always about hope, it was always about change. He never showed any prejudice or was profane. He never got into hate or violence. Michael was Michael," Trotter said.

Carolyn Fox brought along a photo she took with Jackson after attending one of his oncerts early in his career.

"Im just grateful for the opportunity that I had the chance to meet him," Fox said.

Other Chicago religious leaders, including the Rev. Jesse Jackson, have also been remembering the late musician.

Jesse Jackson spent time with the late singer's family in California on Friday.

Jackson told The Associated Press that his first encounter with the late pop artist stands out in his mind. It was at a 1967 inaugural event for Mayor Richard Hatcher in Gary, Ind., where Michael Jackson grew up.

The civil rights leader says the Jackson Five performed and "rocked the house."
