We can't make this up.
When a cab driver found himself face to face with a knife-wielding passenger Thursday, police say he fought back with his deodorant spray. The 51-year-old cabbie, who didn't want to be identified, passed on the more commonly used crime-fighting Mace or pepper spray.
The driver picked up the would-be criminal early Thursday morning outside the Grand Victoria Casino, according to Elgin Deputy Police Chief Jeff Swoboda. He said after the passenger changed his destination, the cabbie got suspicious and secretly put a can of crime-fighting deodorant between his legs.
So when the passenger put a 10-inch knife to the driver's neck, the driver sprayed him in the eyes, forcing the other man to drop his knife.
Swoboda said the passenger did punch the cabbie, but did not seriously injure him before running off and leaving the knife behind.
