An 81-year-old woman made a trip to target and got a whole lot more than she bargained for – a brain injury.

Claire Putman got caught in a malfunctioning automatic door at a Rosemont Target store and received such a drubbing from the contraption that she suffered a “diffuse brain injury” that caused lasting cognitive deficiencies.

Yesterday a jury awarded her $7 million for her June 21, 2007 shopping trip gone bad.

Putnam’s family plans to use the money to care for their ailing matriarch, moving her out of the nursing home where she currently resides and back into the family home.

Target paid out a large settlement.

"One of her family's biggest needs was they wanted to get her out of the nursing home," Putnam’s lawyer Philip Harnett Corboy Jr. told the Sun-Times.

She needs plenty of help.

"She can speak but has trouble processing words and processing thoughts," Corboy said.

Target declined to answer questions about the case for the Sun-Times.
