Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett spent the night of his 60th birthday in a hospital where he was being treated for exhaustion following a 20-kilometer run.
Barrett's spokesman, Jeff Fleming, said the mayor ran the race indoors at the Pettit National Ice Center. He finished Sunday's run before requiring medical attention. Barrett turned 60 on Sunday and wanted to run for 60 minutes, Fleming said.
An ambulance transported Barrett to Froedtert Hospital, where he was treated for dehydration and exhaustion. Fleming said Barrett was expected to return home Monday after an overnight stay in the hospital.
Fleming describes Barrett as a regular runner but said Sunday's run of nearly 12½ miles is a far greater distance than his usual routine.
Barrett, a Democrat who got support from Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel during his unsuccessful run for Wisconsin governor last year, suffered gashes to his head and face, as well as smashed teeth and a fractured hand, after confronting a metal bar-wielding man at the Wisconsin State Fair in 2009.
