Indiana health officials dealing with an HIV outbreak in a rural county on Friday began urging truck drivers and others traveling through the outbreak area to avoid risky sexual behavior.
A public awareness campaign encourages truck drivers and travelers along Interstate 65 between Indianapolis and Louisville, Kentucky, to avoid prostitutes, to use condoms and to limit their sex partners.
The new campaign enlisting posters, door decals, flyers and digital Wi-Fi messages at travel plazas also urges travelers to get tested for HIV.
Officials said 145 people have now tested positive for HIV in southeastern Indiana, where the epidemic tied largely to needle-sharing among intravenous drug users is centered in Scott County.
State Health Commissioner Jerome Adams said truck drivers who find sexual partners in that area are particularly susceptible to becoming infected.
