After Liposuction, Fat Comes Back Elsewhere: Study

Considering liposuction? The fat may come back to haunt you – somewhere else on your body.

A University of Colorado study published this week in Obesity found that patients who underwent the fat-sucking surgery on their lower stomach or thighs eventually gained the weight back within a year in their upper-abdomen, shoulders and arms.

“It's another chapter in the 'You Can't Fool Mother Nature' story,” Dr. Rudolph Leibel, an obesity researcher at Columbia University, told The New York Times.

Researchers, led by Drs. Teri L. Hernandez and Robert H. Eckel, randomly assigned non-obese women to have liposuction while asking another set of women to refrain from having the procedure as a control group. As compensation, the control group was given the option to have liposuction at a reduced price at the conclusion of the study.

But even after the findings, Dr. Eckel said that most of the women were happy and that more than half of the women in the control group still opted for the procedure.
