Chicago Expands Meningitis Vaccine Reccomendation

Health officials say men who have sex with men should get vaccinated

Chicago public health officials have expanded a meningitis vaccine recommendation to include all men who have sex with men as the city sees a growing outbreak of the disease in recent weeks.

The Chicago Department of Public Health on Friday said it made the decision after discussions with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Health officials say there have been six confirmed cases of meningitis among men who have sex with men, including one death, since the beginning of June and they're investigating a potential seventh case. Of those patients, five were Chicago residents.

Health officials say men who have sex with men should get vaccinated or get a booster shot if they were vaccinated more than five years ago. The department is offering free vaccines at the Chicago Pride Festival.
