CTA: Crime Down 25 Percent Thanks to Cams

The camera network expansion on "L" stops was completed late last year

Chicago Transit Authority officials say crime on buses and trains is down nearly 25 percent year-over-year thanks, in part, to ramped up video surveillance efforts.

"Would-be criminals are now on notice that we are watching them, that we are using every tool at our disposal to assist the Chicago police," CTA President Forrest Claypool said Friday in showing off the agency's expanded surveillance center.

The camera network expansion on "L" stops was completed late last year. Since the start of the year, CTA officials said the cameras have had a hand in the arrest of 134 suspected criminals on and off the system.

Security cameras are also coming to the upcoming "L" cars. Older cars may be retrofitted, Claypool said.
