Home prices are down. Stocks are down. And now, to make matters worse, unemployment is up in the state.
The Illinois unemployment rate rose to 7.6 percent in December, the highest level since June 1993 and up from 7.3 percent in November and 5.3 percent a year earlier, according to the Illinois Employment Security Department.
There were 36,000 fewer jobs in December than November, which was the seventh consecutive month of job loss. In November and December, the state lost a total of 73,600 jobs, the largest two-month decline since the agency started keeping track in 1990.
