Fire officials are calling a Tuesday night fire at Valparaiso University's Martin Luther King Jr. Cultural Center "suspicious," the NWI Times reported.

Valparaiso Fire Department Battalion Chief Les Abraham said early Wednesday morning that there was no official determination of the cause of the fire at 606 Freeman.

"It was an empty building, so that brings up suspicious nature," he said.

Valparaiso has been hit with a rash of racially motivated crimes in recent weeks, including racial slurs and vandalism at local businesses, the high school and at residences. The most recent incident occurred when a note was sent to a local gas station threatening to kill "three Arabs" there.
