Chula Vista, Calif. -- Stunned shoppers learned Sunday night that a customer at Wal-Mart had given birth to a baby in the retailer's rest room.

No one was as surprised as Charity Toussaint-Stevens. "I kept saying, this is crazy," said the new mother Monday from her hospital bed at Scripps Mercy Chula Vista. "I can't believe this is happening right now."

Toussaint-Stevens said she was Christmas shopping at the Wal-Mart on Broadway in Chula Vista Sunday night when she needed to use the restroom. This being her fifth pregnancy, Toussaint-Stevens had been feeling contractions throughout the day but believed they were false contractions. While she was in the bathroom, Toussaint-Stevens felt the urge to push. She said within minutes, the baby was born -- just before 7 p.m.

The baby girl weighed 9 pounds and has the name Sydney Hope Toussaint-Stevens. Charity's sister-in-law Teresa Pradd said the new mom is doing fine and "just a little embarrassed" about giving birth in the bathroom. The new grandmother said Sydney is "so cute."

Pradd said not only did Toussaint-Stevens give birth by herself and but managed to keep the baby's head up during the birth. Today, the new mother wanted to thank a man who identified himself as a medical student and helped her tie off the umbilical cord immediately after the baby was born.

A Wal-Mart spokesperson confirmed the birth and said the company has sent the proud mom flowers and a fruit basket. The store manager plans to visit mom and baby on Tuesday.
