OK, this peanut butter thing has just gone too far.

Local retailers Kmart and Fannie May on Friday joined the widening food recall of goods made with peanut products.

Fannie Mae Confections recalled 8- and 16-ounce bags of Bridge Mix and No Sugar Added Milk Chocolate Covered Peanuts because the products may contain peanuts from Peanut Corporation of America.

The Food and Drug Administration has accused the Georgia-based company of knowingly selling peanut butter and peanut paste contaminated with salmonella in what has become a national crisis.

Fannie Mae said it has received no reports of illness connected with the products, but is acting out of caution. The Fannie Mae goods were supplied by Madelaine Chocolate Novelties Inc. of Rockaway Beach, N.Y.

Separately, Kmart announced the voluntary recall of certain cakes and doughnuts at Super Kmarts in Homewood, Tinley Park and Round Lake Beach.

Jif Peanut Butter, owned by the J.M. Smucker Co., ran an ad in the Chicago Sun-Times on Friday to announce that its products have nothing to do with the recall because it gets no products from the suspected plant.

Sara Lee Corp.'s North American Foodservice last week announced a recall of its Chef Pierre Chocolate Peanut Butter Silk Pie, sold through restaurants.
