Penny-pinchers in need of a laptop can snatch up a netbook for 99 cents by signing a two-year agreement with mobile carrier Sprint at Best Buy retail chains, according to NewsFactor.
The plan costs about $60 a month for Spint's 3G Wireless Internet -- a total of $1,440 for two years -- and includes Compaq netbook with a 10-inch screen and 16GB hard drive for less than a buck.
The Compaq netbook typically retails for about $390, according to NewsFactor.
The near-giveaway is part of an increasing retail movement by carriers to get customers to sign up for network plans -- AT&T and Verizon Wireless have similar deals but offer netbook for $199 apiece, according to the site.
The competitive price may be appealing but the three-cell battery can leave users with less juice than desired, industry analyst Avi Greegar told NewsFactor.
Users may not be tied to an Internet connect but "you will be tied to an AC outlet," he said.
