As flames engulfed their Back of the Yards home Tuesday afternoon, a man and his bedridden mother were rescued by firefighters and safely brought out of the burning building.

A still-and-box alarm was called for the blaze at 4749 S. Laflin St. around 12:15 p.m. The one-and-a-half-story frame home was fully involved in flames, according to Fire Media Affairs.

Firefighters from Truck No. 30 pulled up and found a man hanging out a second floor window. They put up a ladder and rescued him, Fire Media Cmdr. Will Knight said. The man told firefighters his bedridden mother was in a back bedroom and the firefighters went into the bedroom and rescued her, Knight said.

The woman was taken to Holy Cross Hospital with minor smoke inhalation, Knight said. The son was taken to Provident Hospital of Cook County, according to Fire Media spokesman Quention Curtis. The son was treated and released, and has since gone to check on his mother at Holy Cross.

The fire was extinguished at about 1:42 p.m.
