A big rig smashed through a construction site on the Tri-State Tollway Tuesday morning, knocking debris onto Metra tracks and snarling the Milwaukee District North Line.

The crash happened around 5:30 a.m. near Rockland Road and the tollway. The tractor-trailer apparently smashed through a construction barrier and careened down an embankment, knocking debris from a viaduct under construction onto the tracks.

At 8:30 a.m., trains were still running 30 to 40 minutes behind schedule, according to Metra.

There has been no word on the big rig driver's condition.
