Housing Proposed for Former Children's Hospital Site

Developer sets sights on former hospital land for 1,000 housing units

The site of the former Children's Memorial Hospital may become new housing in Lincoln Park.

According to a zoning application filed with the City Council, McCaffery Interests Inc. wants to build 1,000 housing units and three towers on the six-acre campus, according to Crain's Chicago Business.

The zoning application also calls for 164,500 square feet of retail space.

Three new towers would consist of a 24-story building for residents at the northeast corner of Lincoln Avenue and Orchard Street, a 27-story building on the east side of Lincoln south of Fullerton Avenue, and a 14-story building on the west side of Lincoln south of Fullerton, Crain's reports.

Existing buildings on the site would also be converted into housing units.

McCaffery's zoning application also shows public spaces at the site, including a landscaped courtyard.

The neighborhood meeting on the new proposal starts at 6 p.m. at the DePaul Student Center, at 2250 N. Sheffield Ave. That's according to an email from Ald. Michele Smith (43rd), who represents Lincoln Park.
