Thursday night, the Bears will play a short-week rebound game against the San Fransisco 49ers. It seems the 49ers are more excited about this prospect than the Bears.
49ers tight end Vernon Davis, a likely Pro Bowl selection for 2009, isn't all that concerned with the Bears defense -- and he didn't mind telling Bay Area reporters exactly how he felt:
''We can destroy their guys up front,'' Davis told Bay Area reporters. ''I don't see anything spectacular about their front line. We can handle [their linebackers] pretty well. I like [defensive end] Adewale Ogunluye -- he's performing well, but he's the only guy I like in their line.''
''[The Bears] have given up a lot of points,'' Davis said. ''There's an opportunity for us, especially there in their secondary, for us to make plays. We just have to go out and do it. Enough talking -- go do it.''
Always a big fan of the guy who starts the talking portion of the mid-week drama and then ends said talking by saying "enough talking." I get the last word! No one retort!
But if given the chance, what retort would the Bears even have? They have been pantsed in two straight blowout losses. Their linebackers have been easy to handle in the run game. Their secondary has been shredded faster and more comprehensively than anything in Goldman Sachs' offices.
The 49ers are not the most complete offense in the league, but they have the ability to recreate the Bears' failures Thursday night. If Davis was making a prediction, it'd be a sage one.
In the meantime, it's up to the Bears. When was the last time someone so blatantly called out the Bears' defense? If that doesn't motivate you not to punch people in the face in the first minute of a football game, what will?
