Eternal Flame Returns to JFK Gravesite After Repairs

Workers used a torch to carry the flame and pass it to a temporary burner Monday

Visitors to Arlington National Cemetery will see a familiar icon back in its place Tuesday.

The eternal flame will be moved back to its permanent spot at the gravesite of President John F. Kennedy. Back in April, workers used a torch to carry the flame and pass it to a temporary burner that was visible to tourists while upgrades and repairs were completed.

Since then, crews have installed new gas lines and more efficient burners.

A temporary flame was used from the time of Kennedy's November 1963 funeral until the permanent flame was established in 1967.

Kennedy was fatally shot on Nov. 22, 1963, in Dallas while riding in a presidential motorcade with his wife Jacqueline, Texas Governor John Connally and Connally's wife Nellie through Dealey Plaza.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of his death.
