By a nearly two-to-one margin, Illinois voters have approved amending the state constitution to allow the recall of governors.
The amendment will allow for a special recall election if 15 percent of the voters who cast ballots in the last gubernatorial election sign a petition to throw the bum out. That’ll require about 525,000 signatures.
If the governor is recalled, Illinois would hold a special election within 60 days to choose a new governor. The State Board of Elections estimates the two votes would cost $101 million.
The amendment may still face a legal challenge. Some say the amendment, as written, isn't legal under the United States Constitution.
