Why Work is Stressing You Out

Job burnout, stress levels high in Chicago

If you would rather stab your eyes out than go to work tomorrow, turns out you're not alone.

Low profits, fewer jobs and a precarious economic future are making stress levels at the office the only thing that seem to be doing a booming business.

A study by the American Psychological Association shows Chicago workers blame low salaries, work interfering with personal time and job insecurity as "significant" stress sources. More than one out of four employees said they missed at least one day of work because of stress.

Which seems to lead to another bad habit. Chicago workers are twice as likely as others around the country to manage their stress with alcohol.

"If you constantly feel overwhelmed, frazzled or on-edge, it's important to identify the sources of your stress and work to overcome them one at a time," Greg Petersen, health psychologist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital's Center for Integrative Medicine and Wellness, said in the Chicago Tribune. "It's also important to structure regular down time and learn how to relax both mentally and physically."
