Demonstrators Arrested at Immigration Protest

Protesters are calling for an end to deportations and condemning a proposed immigrant detention center in the Chicago-area community of Crete

At least two people were arrested Tuesday afternoon during a demonstration protesting U.S. immigration policy.

The Rev. Jose Landaverd, pastor of the Anglican Church of our Lady of Guadalupe, was one of those arrested for failing to move off of the property.

Tuesday's protest is among many leading up to this weekend's NATO summit.

The small group includes anti-war protesters and members of the Occupy movement. They were chanting "Si, Se Puede,'' a phrase coined by Hispanic civil rights leader Cesar Chavez that roughly means "yes we can."

Police on Tuesday were using their bodies and bicycles to block the entrance to a downtown building, at 525 W. Van Buren St., that houses a federal immigration court. Protesters were sitting on the ground outside.

One officer, at the request of building management, used a bullhorn to tell the crowd the vacate.
