“The View” Tests Obama's Pop Culture Mettle

After explaining his recent support for gay marriage, the president proved even he has heard of a certain 72-day heterosexual celebrity marriage

President Barack Obama proved to the women of "The View" Tuesday that even while he leads the free world he manages to keep up with popular culture — sometimes.

After the president talked gay marriage, the economy and his campaign for reelection, the talk show's hosts grilled him on the big issues: celebrities.

He successfully answered the question about which Kardashian had been married just 72 days.

"Um… that would be Kim. 'Cause it was a ball player, that's how I know," he said, referring to the reality star's short-lived marriage to New Jersey Nets player Kris Humphries.

Obama wasn't so up on the names of Jessica Simpson's baby (that would be Maxwell Drew) or the best-selling erotic fiction phenom (that would be "Fifty Shades of Grey").

"I don't know that, but I'll ask Michelle when I get home," the president joked of the latter.

But he could name the "View" host who competed on "Dancing with the Stars" and three characters from "The Avengers."

And he said he recognized "Modern Family" as a television show with a gay couple's family among its major characters, because his daughters enjoy watching it.

As for what he watches?

"Michelle would say that I will watch any sport, it doesn't matter. Curling… Pool….The luge…" he joked.

Obama also chatted about his day-to-day habits with his family, including the reason he doesn't tweet.

"I'm too long-winded for 140 characters," he said.

He also described the way he embarrasses his family, with his older daughter Malia opining that he is "just the right amount of embarrassing" and First Lady Michelle Obama cringing at his crooning a few bars of Al Green at an event at the Apollo Theater this year.

"Michelle gets jealous when I sing too much," he said of the public song.

He also talked about serving as volunteer coach for younger daughter Sasha's basketball team and praised the way Title IX had opened up athletic opportunities for women and girls.

"One of the great things that's happened during the course of my lifetime is women's sports becoming just as important," he said.

This being days after he announced his support for gay marriage and launched his reelection campaign, of course, the president also made his pitch for another term in office — and praised Vice President Joe Biden, whose comments to "Meet the Press" spurred Obama's gay marriage statement.

"What I want to spend the next five years doing is recreating that America where if you work hard, you can make it," he said. "I could not be more proud of this country."
