Mariah Carey Still In the “Idol” Mix

A major heartbreaker could still end up sitting in the third "American Idol" judge's chair this fall.

Pop diva Mariah Carey is reportedly in talks with the show to help mint America's newest pop star alongside Randy Jackson and the recently hired Steven Tylerreports E! Online.

"She wants it," says a source close to the situation. "She's seen what 'America's Got Talent' has done for [hubby Nick Cannon] and thinks it will be a good career move."

A rep for Carey only stated that there was "nothing to report" when contacted for confirmation on the possible negotiations.

Tyler has all but been confirmed for one of the open seats, but landing the last judge has been a difficult task for the show. Talks with Jennifer Lopez recently broke down, and rumored flirtations with stars such as Justin Timberlake and Elton John have not yielded any results.

Carey could have an inside track to the job due to the chemistry she has with Jackson, who has served as her occasional musical director and performed with her band over the years.

Returning executive producer Nigel Lythgoe apparently favors a three-judge panel with an occasional guest judge, but the setup will be determined by negotiations.
