Sochi Olympics Day 1: What to Watch

Figure skater Ashley Wagner takes the ice; 5 medal ceremonies on the schedule

Five gold medals are up for grabs on the first official day of Olympic competition. The action kicks off Saturday morning in the mountains above Sochi where men's slopestyle snowboarders will battle for a spot in the finals and later a place on the podium.

Other medals will be awarded in speedskating, biathlon, cross-country and freestyle skiing.

Meanwhile, American figure skater Ashley Wagner will take the ice for her first performance of the Games and her first competitive appearance since her falls at the U.S. Championships last month. She and  ice dancing partners Meryl Davis and Charlie White will represent the U.S. in the latest phase of the new team figure skating event.

Below, find a full break-down of what to watch, where:

12:30 a.m. ET: Watch the first event of the day--men's slopstyle snowboarding semi-finals--at NBCOlympics.com. Twenty athletes go head-to-head for four open slots at the finals. With three athletes now out of the event--Austrian Adrian Krainer and Norweigan Torstein Horgm for injuries; Shaun White to focus on halfpipe--American Charles Guldemond could find his way into the final round.

Top scorers at semi-finals head to the medal round (3:45 a.m. ET here) where they'll face stiff competition from Canadian snowboard stars Max Parrot and Mark McMorris.

1 a.m.: In case you missed it, NBC will re-air the complete broadcast of the Sochi Opening Ceremony.

3 a.m. ET: The U.S. women's hockey team takes on Finland in a preliminary-round opener. The U.S. is going for its first gold since the 1998 Nagano Games. Watch live online or on NBC Sports.

5:00 a.m. ET: Women's cross country skiers compete in the skiathlon medal event, while Dutch speed skater Sven Kramer will go for his third medal in the 5000m at 6:30 a.m. Catch both on NBC Sports, or follow the complete events on NBCOlympics.com.

9 a.m. ET:  American Hannah Kearney goes for her second Olympic gold in women's moguls. She dominated Thursday's qualifier event posting the highest score of the day--23.05 out of a possible 30 points. The next phase of the competition--a four-part knockout-style round--begins at 9 a.m. ET. The final round starts at 1 p.m. ET. Watch here.

9:30 a.m. ET: The new figure skating team event continues Saturday morning with ice dancing. American partners and reigning Olympic silver medalists Meryl Davis and Charlie White will give their first performance of the Games. Watch live here, on NBC Sports or catch highlights on NBC prime time.

11 a.m. ET: First time Olympian Ashley Wagner will compete in the women's singles portion of the figure skating team event. Her last competitive performance was marred by two falls that raised questions about her addition to the Olympic team. Her stumbles at the U.S. Championships last month inspired her to overhaul her Sochi routine with just weeks to get it right. Watch her live here, on NBC Sports or catch highlights on NBC prime time.

2:30 p.m.-6 p.m. ET: NBC Sports will cover a ski jumping qualification round in the men's normal hill competition, men's biathlon 10km sprint and women's cross country skiathlon.

8 p.m.: NBC prime time will broadcast the gold medal final of slopestyle snowboarding, Hannah Kearney's moguls push, and highlights from the team figure skating event.
