Television host Oprah Winfrey speaks at a campaign rally led by Michelle Obama on February 3, 2007 in Los Angeles, California. Winfrey will star in a new HBO film debuting in April.

Henrietta Lacks, an impoverished tobacco farmer diagnosed with cancer, lay in the “colored” unit at John Hopkins University in the early 1950s. While on her death bed, her cells were harvested without her permission in 1951, leading to the first immortal human cell line.

HBO’s new film, “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,” chronicles her history through her daughter Deborah’s search for answers about the mother she had never truly known. Based on Rebecca Skloot’s critically acclaimed biography, the movie stars Oprah Winfrey and Rose Byrne, with a screenplay by George C. Wolfe.

Winfrey plays Deborah, whose family is unable to afford health insurance in East Baltimore while her mother's cells are saving lives around the world.

HBO announced Tuesday “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” will premiere on April 22 at 8 p.m. EST.
