Michael Phelps Has Sore Ankle Following Accident, Will Continue Training

Swimmer still has sore ankle

Swimmer Michael Phelps is still nursing a sore ankle from the car accident he was in Thursday, but the Olympic gold medalist intends to resume training Monday.

In a message on his official Facebook site, Phelps also expressed concern for the woman involved in the car crash, which occurred when she ran a red light, according to Baltimore police.

"Thanks everybody who has reached out since the accident," Phelps posed. "I am fine and glad nobody was seriously hurt. I hope the other driver is doing OK. My ankle hurts and I am having it checked out, but nothing that is going to prevent me from getting back to training on Monday. Hope you guys have a good weekend."

Phelps posted the message shortly after 3:30 p.m. in the East Coast, and by 6 o'clock had nearly 1,000 responses.

The Olympic star was driving with an invalid, out-of-state license and told police he drank a beer about 75 minutes before he was involved in an accident.

Police did not administer field sobriety tests because Phelps showed no signs of being impaired by alcohol.

He will be cited for driving without a license and failure to establish residency in Maryland, police said.

Phelps has won a record 14 gold medals, including eight at last year's Beijing Olympics. He recently won five gold medals and a silver at the world swimming championships in Rome.

John Cadigan, a senior coach with the North Baltimore Aquatic Club, which is based at the swim center operated by Phelps and his coach, said Friday that Phelps was not expected to be back at practice until next week.
