Jay Bennett's death has been confirmed as an overdose, though authorities are investigating it as an accident.
The tests are in, and Wilco fans have never sung a sadder tune.
Ex-Wilco member Jay Bennett died of a pain killer overdose, according to authorities. They are currently investigating his death as an accident.
The drug in question is Fentanyl, Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup said. Fentanyl is commonly found in patches used to treat chronic pain.
Bennett played in Chicago-based Wilco from 1994 to 2001 and worked as a sound engineer in Urbana until his May 24 death.
Despite legal battles between Bennett and Wilco in early May, Wilco front man Jeff Tweedy said the band was “deeply saddened by this tragedy,” at the news of Bennett’s death.
Bennett was a University of Illinois graduate and was born in the Rolling Meadows suburb outside of Chicago.
