    Singer Chris Brown was sentenced to 180 days community service for assaulting his then-girlfriend Rihanna. Wednesday he started serving his sentence in Richmond, VA.

    RICHMOND, Va. -- Singer Chris Brown cleared weeds and debris at police horse stables in Virginia as part of his community service for beating ex-girlfriend Rihanna.

    Richmond television stations showed Brown working Wednesday as police stood nearby. He wore an orange vest, white tank top, baggy jeans and red baseball cap and carried a yard tool to cut tall weeds.

    Brown did not speak to the media but he waved to fans who saw him working.

    Singer Chris Brown was sentenced to 180 days community service for assaulting his then-girlfriend Rihanna. Wednesday he started serving his sentence in Richmond, VA.

    The 20-year-old was sentenced in California last month to five years' probation, six months of community labor and a year of domestic violence counseling for the February attack.

    He is performing the labor and undergoing counseling in Richmond, near his home in Montpelier.

    A police spokeswoman would not discuss Brown's work.
