Chicago Tribune Endorses Rahm Emanuel

The Chicago Tribune on Friday gave its endorsement to Rahm Emanuel in the race for Chicago mayor.

In an editorial released Friday afternoon, the Tribune praised Emanuel for what it called his "tactical shrewdness, ethical conduct and inexhaustible energy."

It also said the former congressman and White House chief of staff has an immense network of contacts he can use to lure the best minds available to city government.

Specifically, the Tribune's editorial board said it was impressed by Emanuel's forthrightness about the crisis in city finances. It said he was the only candidate to be frank about the immediate need to reform Chicago's pension system and show his willingness to take necessary steps -- some of them unpopular -- to achieve that goal.

The Chicago Sun-Times endorsed Emanuel on Sunday.
