Dan Hynes didn't accept the White House's invitation to join President Obama in Quincy today Wednesday.
"Appropriations hearing," says Hynes' spokesman.
But other possible explanations abound: would Hynes simply prefer not to fly down with former opponent Gov. Pat Quinn? Or, is he keeping his distance from Senate candidate Alexi Giannoulias?
The latter question's intriguing, as Hynes has been mentioned as a possible replacement should Giannoulias decide to drop out of the Senate race.
Meanwhile, Attorney General Lisa Madigan planned to make a gametime decision.
