Ted Cruz to Attend Fundraiser Honoring Rauner in Lead-Up to Primary

The Texas senator will attend a fundraiser to honor Illinois’ governor on the Friday before the March 15 primary

Presidential hopeful and Texas Senator Ted Cruz will attend a fundraiser honoring Gov. Bruce Rauner on March 11.

The fundraiser, scheduled to be held at the Palmer House Hilton, is hosted by the Illinois Republican Party.

Invitations have been extended to all current GOP presidential contenders, including frontrunner Donald Trump, and some former candidates.

Rauner has come under fire due to his handling of the state's budget impasse.

Tickets for the invitation-only event will range from a $500-per-person option to a $40,000 “Gold Sponsor” option. The latter includes seating for 20, an option for a photo opportunity and a one-year membership in the “Governor’s Council.”

Cruz won the Iowa caucus earlier this month, receiving 28 percent of the vote. His campaign has since faltered after placing third in New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada.

Donald Trump has emerged as the clear frontrunner in the Republican race. According to a new poll of Illinois voters conducted by the Paul Simon Policy Institute at Southern Illinois, Trump received 28 percent of votes with Ted Cruz receiving 15 percent, Marco Rubio receiving 14 percent and John Kasich receiving 13 percent.

Cruz's Democratic counterparts, Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton, have both recently opened offices in Chicago.
