Bruce Rauner, the Republican candidate for governor, may have a point that state employees are overpaid. Ward Room examined databases of university employees’ salaries, and found that two are earning more than a million dollars a year: Tim Beckman, head football coach at the University of Illinois, and John Groce, head basketball coach at the University of Illinois.

That’s not a lot of money by the standards of Rauner, who’s a billionaire, but it’s more than the taxpayers should have to pay for.
After those coaches, the highest paid public employee in Illinois is Dimitri Azar, dean of the College of Medicine at the University of Illinois-Chicago. Dr. Azar earns $714,000 a year, but he’s training young people to save lives, so maybe we don’t resent him so much. Here's a list of salaries at U of I.
Anyway, if Bruce Rauner is looking to cut public employees’ salaries, here are a few to start with:
Tim Beckman, football coach, University of Illinois: $1.6 million
John Groce, men’s basketball coach, University of Illinois: $1.4 million
Chris Lowery, men’s basketball coach, Southern Illinois University: $750,000
Michael J. Thomas, athletic director, University of Illinois: $489,250
Paul Petrino, assistant football coach, University of Illinois: $520,000
Dave Doeren, football coach, Northern Illinois University, $420,000
Matt Bollant, women’s basketball coach, University of Illinois: $330,000
Howard Moore, men’s basketball coach, University of Illinois-Chicago: $300,000
Kevin Hambly, volleyball coach, University of Illinois: $145,000
Mike Small, golf coach, University of Illinois: $140,000
