Oberweis Confirms He's In Florida Week Before Primary

It must have been some birthday celebration.

State Sen. Jim Oberweis, who refused to answer NBC 5’s questions when asked where he was, has confirmed what we exclusively reported. He is in Florida.

Days before the Illinois primary, Oberweis told the Chicago Tribune he traveled to Florida “to fulfill a promise to my wife to spend a few days with her in Florida for her birthday … and to raise money for my U.S. Senate race.”

Records show Julie Oberweis’ birthday was Saturday, March 8. She moved to their Bonita Springs Florida condo in 2010 and cannot vote for her husband in next week’s primary.

When reached by telephone Tuesday and asked if he was in Illinois, Oberweis said “I’m not answering that question.” He did say he's "really focused on November," where he hopes to battle incumbent Democratic U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin.

He’s running against Doug Truax in the Republican primary. Truax says the Florida trip is proof Oberweis is unelectable.
