O Rahm, O Rahm Emanuel

Last Sunday, your Ward Room blogger went to church. The first hymn on the board was #9, “O Come, O Come Emmanuel.” It’s a seasonal favorite, but it made me think, “Rahm really has a big advertising budget.” Throughout the service, every Bible verse was about “Emmanuel, the son of God.” Afterward, I told the pastor, “I felt like I just sat through a campaign rally.”

In honor of Christmas, and in honor of Rahm Emanuel, here are new lyrics to that hymn, as though it actually were about our leading mayoral candidate.

O Rahm, O Rahm Emanuel
Please save us from our civic hell
Chicago mourns for its boss mayor
Until the son of Daley appear

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emanuel shall come to thee,
Chicagoans you have no other choice.

O come Chicago, come and cheer
The savior of our city’s here
He’ll rescue us from soul’s dark night
And wash our politics snow-white

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emanuel shall come to thee,
Chicagoans you have no other choice.

O come, Thou Key of Daley, come
We don’t care that you have no home
Three wise men on the Election Board
Have recognized you as our lord.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emanuel shall come to thee,
Chicagoans you have no other choice.

O come, heir to the mayoral crown
Unite the tribes, black, white and brown
In City Hall you’ll be the law
Each alderman will bow in awe.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emanuel shall come to thee,
Chicagoans you have no other choice.
