The Buzz: Michael J. Madigan is speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives and chairman of the Illinois Democratic Party. He has held his position as speaker since 1983 (barring two years of Republican majority). He has been a member of the House of Representatives since 1971.
Madigan has been known to feud with many Democratic leaders, most notably former Gov. Rod Blagojevich, with whom he had numerous public disputes.
Madigan faces harsh criticism from the Republican Party, whose chairman consistently refers to Madigan as "leprechaun," has compared him to his adversary Blagojevich, and who most recently began a "Fire Madigan" campaign.
