Jan Schakowsky Endorses Robin Kelly

Robin Kelly is spending so much time with the Illinois congressional delegation, it’s as though she’s already a member.

On Tuesday night, Kelly attended President Obama’s State of the Union address as a guest of Rep. Bobby Rush. (Kelly was in the state House when Obama was a state senator. The two worked together on a bill to criminalize straw purchases of firearms.) Last week, Rush and Rep. Danny Davis, the state’s two current African-American congressmen, held a joint press conference to endorse Kelly.

Today, Kelly also received the endorsement of Rep. Jan Schakowsky, whose district includes the Far North Side of Chicago and the North Shore.

"One of the reasons is the gun issue,” Schakowsky told Roll Call, the congressional newspaper. “She has the view that we need to do some sensible violence prevention legislation.”

Referring to rival candidates Toi Hutchinson and Debbie Halvorson, Schakowsky said, “The other two have A ratings from the National Rifle Association. I think that’s an important issue.”

The Democratic primary, which will decide who wins the seat, is Feb. 26.
