House To Vote Next Month On Expelling Smith

Illinois House members will vote next month on whether to expel indicted state Rep. Derrick Smith.

Speaker Mike Madigan issued a memo Friday saying the House will convene Aug. 17 at 11 a.m. and members should plan to adjourn the same day.

Madigan spokesman Steve Brown confirms that House lawmakers will vote on the Smith expulsion. A two-thirds vote is required. Brown says it's up to members to put anything else on the agenda.

A House committee on Thursday recommended Smith be expelled from office after hearing evidence about bribery allegations.

Federal prosecutors contend Smith took a $7,000 bribe in exchange for promising to steer a state grant to a daycare center.

The Chicago Democrat has pleaded not guilty, refused to step aside and remains on the November ballot.
