Emanuel Plans 24-hour Fast for Immigration Reform

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and several city alderman plan to fast for 24 hours to support immigration reform efforts.

The mayor's office says the 54-year-old will announce his fast during a Thursday evening event at a church on the city's South Side. He'll be attending a Mass at St. Pious Church to mark the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Emanuel will stop eating to show his solidarity with Fast for Families protesters in Washington who are committing to consume only water as Congress considers immigration legislation.

In a statement, Emanuel says the timing coincides with Mexico's religious holiday and is a way to "remind our leaders what is at stake in the fight for immigration reform."
