Durbin Confident Democrats Will Retain House and Senate

Senator Dick Durbin said today that, rumors and speculation to the contrary, he believes his party will retain control of both legislative houses in the mid-term elections.

"At the end of the day I believe Democrats will retain the majority in the House and the Senate," Durbin said today while speaking at the Chicago Board of Trade on the Wall Street reform act. Alongside Durbin were Senator Roland Burris and representatives Jan Schakowsky and Melissa Bean.

Both Schakowsky and Bean walked away from reporters once questions about Blagojevich came up.

Noticeably absent from today's newser was Democratic Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr., whose name was mentioned inauspiciously during the Blagojevich trial recently.

A government witness testified that Jackson was present when one of his fundraisers offered Robert Blagojevich $1 million in campaign funds in exchange for appointing Jackson to the Senate.

Meanwhile, Senator Burris, embattled ever since his appointment by former Gov. Blagojevich, spoke bitterly about his time in office and his inability to run for his current office again.

"You took 30 years of a great career and smashed it," Burris said of the media. He added that if there is a special election for the seat, "If there is a special election, I'm announcing my candidacy right now. I will run."

Burris mentioned he was upset with Congressman Mark Kirk for using Burris' photograph in a TV ad which accuses the Democrats of being corrupt.

Burris refused to comment on the Blagojevich trial.
